Who are the Friends of Gaitley?
Friends of Gaitley is a group of citizens from Glen Cove who would like to see Gaitley Stevenson-Mathews making a difference at city hall as a City of Glen Cove city councilman. They have known Gaitley for many years and feel he will make a positive impact on our community.
Let me introduce you to some of the Friends of Gaitley!
Jay is a licensed architect and experienced construction manager. Jay has an array of specialized training and experiences, bringing a background of leadership, problem solving and people skills to the table. Jay is sensitive to design elements, including ADA requirements and environmentally sustainable design. He has won various awards for design excellence. He lives in the Shorecrest neighborhood of Glen Cove with his wife Barbara and has been a resident of the community for 37 years. Jay and his family have known Gaitley, since he moved into Glen Cove. Jay has experienced how Gaitley has been involved with making the community a better place and how his commitment to Glen Cove is contagious. Therefore, Jay is excited to be part of a team that strives for an even better Glen Cove.
Cynthia has lived in the landing for 22 years. As a single mother, she has raised two children, her daughter is in high school and her son is going off to AU in the fall. She has worked with the young students at Landing Elementary School and the elderly at Glen Cove Rehabilitation. She is compassionate, engaging and delightful to work with. Cynthia believes in paying it forward, as she is often delivering home cooked food to those in need or leaving cash or food for anyone who may be hungry. She is a Syracuse University graduate and very involved in her synagogue. The moment I met Gaitely I was in awe of his talents and his love of life. He can move mountains, and turn seeds into gardens. His magnetic ability to listen and learn from anyone is most genuine.
Tamara is a high school math teacher and the Senior Class Dean at Friends Academy where she has worked for the last twenty five years. Tamara and her husband, James have three daughters. All three daughters attended Friends Academy and all are currently attending college. Tamara, originally from Philadelphia, enjoys singing and going to church. Tamara and her husband James have lived in Glen Cove for 19 years. As an advocate for social justice,Tamara is thrilled to be a part of Gaitley's team as she believes that Gaitley brings the energy and insights that Glen Cove needs and deserves.
Paula is an attorney specializing in civil, criminal and tax appeals. She and her husband, Steven, have been residents of Glen Cove for 40 years, currently living in the Landing. Both Paula and Steven are past Presidents of North Country Reform Temple, and Paula is active in social justice causes. Paula is proud to support Gaitley, and is impressed with his energy and his commitment to bring all of the communities together to make a better Glen Cove.
Cathy and Tony Guagenti

To update shortly
Peter and Eleanor Rapelje
Peter and Eleanor have been married for 62 years. Eleanor was born in Glen Cove, Peter has been a resident since he was 6. Eleanor was a former teacher at St. Paul's Nursery School and Peter was a Configuration Data Manager at Grumman Aerospace Corp. Sailors for most of their lives, both have enjoyed sailing on Long Island Sound venturing as far as Maine in a 26 ft. sailboat. They have camped from coast to coast. It is with great pleasure that we join Gaitley's team as we have been witness to Gaitley's organizational and leadership skills for the past years.
How can I volunteer?
Quite frankly, we are in the very beginning stages of putting things together. As the volunteers formulate things, there may be other positions to fill as far as getting things organized. Therefore, if you have a specific talent you can lend in this initiative of simply getting citizens to meetings let us know. That said, so that one hand knows what the other hand is doing, the sentiment may be to keep, at least this managerial aspect of the initiative, at nine members. But, please reach out. The other thing to bear in mind is that when the campaign gets full swing, this structure may change with many opportunities for involvement and we will need, in the very biggest way, all hands on deck!
