GAITLEY'S VOTING RECORD
SPENDING
Gaitley has been a conscientious steward of the city’s economy.
Presented with a budget to raise taxes, Gaitley made line-by-line suggestions that would have lowered the budget and reduced the tax burden on residents.

When these changes were not adopted, he continued his push with alternate suggestions for reductions via detailed errata sheets. Ultimately, these suggestions were also rejected.
Gaitley’s voice was loud and clear at the October 27, 2020 Council meeting: “Our responsibility is to the taxpayer!”
Gaitley also continues to support cultivating outside revenue. He voted to increase fees for filming in the city and advocates for public/private partnerships to help fund projects that serve our families and community.

DEVELOPMENT
Gaitley has worked to limit excess development in Glen Cove. When Livingston Development attempted to increase the density of the Villa Project, Gaitley abstained on the vote to send the project forward. His abstention was not because of any personal conflict, but because he did not support the increase in density and, in having reviewed the language of the code, he had doubts about the obligation of the Council to send the application to the Zoning Board.
At the February 4th pre-council meeting, he said: “40 additional units is the breaking point for me. I like development, but only when it’s smart and balanced - and this doesn’t seem like either.”
Ultimately, the developer scaled back its request, reverting to the originally-approved number of units. Due to the pressure, Livingston also reduced the height of five of the six buildings and proposed a lesser number of bedrooms. In the end, density at the site decreased.

SENIORS
As the city’s liaison to the Senior Center, Gaitley serves on several boards directly related to the wellbeing of seniors. His firsthand knowledge of challenges facing our aging population is reflected in his voting record. Gaitley has worked to make Glen Cove a safe and hospitable place for its older residents.
One major area of focus has been the Loop Bus, which serves seniors and others in need of transportation. Gaitley worked with the Mayor’s office in securing substitute drivers and voted to procure a new bus, which was 85% funded by the federal government.
As a member of the Age-Friendly Glen Cove Advisory Board, he continues to find better ways to serve Glen Cove’s aging population.

TOLERANCE AND INCLUSION
Gaitley has worked to make Glen Cove welcoming to all. Through his strong relationship with the Nassau County Tolerance Center and the American Jewish Committee (AJC), Gaitley strongly supported Glen Cove becoming the first municipality to adopt the IHRA’s working definition of Anti-Semitism. He continues to advocate for stronger language protecting all individuals from workplace discrimination, which he first brought to the attention of the city as a CDA member.

HEALTH AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Gaitley supported legislation to ameliorate lead pipes remaining in Glen Cove, and to find new wells to ensure safe, plentiful water for Glen Cove residents. He also voted in support of an intermunicipal agreement with the Town of Oyster Bay and the Town of North Hempstead for debris removal from Hempstead Harbor.

SUPPORT OF LOCAL BUSINESSES
Gaitley supported the closing of School Street and Glen Street to promote outdoor dining during the pandemic, a boon to local restaurants. This past April, he was pleased to once again support the initiative now enjoyed by so many residents.

VETERANS
Gaitley works closely with our veterans. He supported the naming of a local street for long-time resident Bob O’Neill, a World War II veteran of the Battle of the Bulge, who died at age 95 in August 2020.
He has also advocated for the establishment of an ad campaign reminding residents of the challenges facing many vets, especially those relating to fireworks and fireworks displays.
Gaitley supported the addition of names to the Landing Roll of Honor Monument to WW II veterans and supported the adoption of the SAR (Suicide Awareness and Remembrance) Flag to support returning veterans.
